All Unicans are required to adhere to the strict laws of reproduction for the purpose of seeing to the empire's expansion.
Regular male Unican citizens are encouraged to have up to 5 mating partners. Powered Unicans, however, have only 1 mating partner, and unlike regular citizens, these mates are typically for life (though this is not a rule, just a tendency). Citizens mate with citizens, and powered people mate with powered people, with the exception of scientists or other brainy individuals oftentimes being paired with powered people in hopes of creating a new branch of higher intellect individuals. Siblings do not mate, however it is possible for close relatives to mate.
Regular citizens have the power to choose their mating partners. Privates and Privates First Class are assigned mating partners, but once attaing the rank of Specialist then military personnel may choose with whom they mate. This typically (buy not exclusively) means that higher ranking mating partners are in mutually desired relationships. A Specialist choosing a Private leaves no room for denial, but a Specialist choosing a Specialist could potentially end in refusal. Any refusal to mate, however, is shameful and openly criticized.
Mating takes place during leisure hours or after work jobs for the powered people. The only exception to powered not being in their beds or barracks at the right time is if they are up to mate. Mating is highly praised and even idolized by Unicans.
Children take the surname of their mother. Fathers can potentially impregnate five women a year, and hundreds in their lifetime. To avoid too many of their few people falling into surname anonymity, and to praise women for their 9 months of service to the empire and for their labor in childbirth, children take their mother's name. The exception to this natural rule is if a mother dies during childbirth. In this case, the child will take its fathers name.
