She was identified as a potential new recruit after solving a complex irrigation problem and earning the attention of the senior scientists who had toiled over the problem for months. Ivy has never had a mating partner.

You have successfully survived the experimentation process. (Unfortunately, due to the nature of the surgeries, your old memories have been lost.) Your awakened power is that of Illusion Manipulation, which will allow you to cast illusions into the minds of others. This can be in the form of grand worlds before their eyes, or simply tampering with their emotional states. You can cause a person to feel immense pleasure, to not see their enemy, or to think they see an enemy in a different direction. Emotional manipulation is most powerful with you alone, as you perhaps can make an enemy feel as though they can trust you, but you cannot make an enemy feel as though they can trust your friend. .
We are your new family now. Unica above all.

Lyons sat beside the Private's bed with a book opened in his hands. He was reading about the human brain while he waited for Private Villanueva to wake up from her procedure. Her file labeled her a telepathic, and he just so happened to have brought a book on the brain. Roman was devouring the pages, eager to uncover what the scientists had found in the brain that enabled them to manipulate a subject's structure in such a way that could give them the ability to impress upon another brain's thoughts. It was fascinating.
She stirred, and Lyons slowly closed the book in order to watch her come to. He would not tell her what he ability was just yet, though she would likely feel something different within herself.
"Private Villanueva." Lyons greeted, pushing back his chair as he stood, the rubber on the bottom of it keeping it from scratching. He waited a moment longer, allowing her to find herself and him. For this Private Lyons had something like a wisp of a smile. She fascinated him. "I am Specialist Lyons, Leader of the Phoenix unit." She might not know what he was talking about, and for right now that was okay. Romans offered her a helping hand to her feet.
"Follow me." Even if he was interested in her, he was still not pressed to be more friendly than...well, than he ever was. Specialist Lyons was a naturally removed man. It took a special kind of persistence to get beyond this stage with him.
Lyons led the new Private through a maze of hallways and to a metal door. He opened it, and within was a large white room with white walls. He closed the door behind them. The only object in the room was sitting in a chair in the center of the space; a man. From his orange jumpsuit, the Private would know that this man had committed some kind of crime. In Unica, people weren't sentenced to life in imprisonment. They were executed by way of Exposure. That is, they were taken to the surface world without skin protection and left to the exposure of radiation, a sun that literally melted their skin, and then acidic rain. It was a slow and terrible way to die, but it saved resources and was a daunting threat to any Unican who might think of doing something against the law.
"He is scheduled to Exposure tomorrow morning." Lyons said indifferently, as though the man were not a man, but an animal. If she knew his crime, perhaps she would think so too. "You have the power to cast illusions into the minds of people you see. The closer you are, the more powerful and realistic the illusion is to them. The less targets you have, the same." Lyons turned his gaze from Ivy to the man restrained in the chair. He glared up at them.
"Unlock your ability. Test what you are capable of on him." Lyons folded his arms against his chest and backed away. He was very aware of the possibility of him getting wrapped up in her illusion...and his blood pressure was spiking with excitement.

The darkness was laced with anticipation. Ivy was not aware of the bed she lay upon, or the procedure she had just undergone, or the man who sat in the corner whose gaze flickered to her every few moments. Slowly the black on her eyelids shifted to a lighter color, a reddish hue from the light in the ceiling. She stirred slightly, and as her mind shifted from unconsciousness to consciousness, she sensed a disturbance.
Ivy had often lain in her bed in the wee hours of the morning, just after waking with her eyes still closed, enjoying the feeling of breathing in and out. She had no memory of this, of course. But her lungs moved just the same as they had before, the air flowing through trachea to bronchiole to tiniest capillary, sending tingling feelings to the tips of her fingers. She tested her fingers; each moved on command. She tested her toes in the same way. She felt her heart thumping in her chest. Still, something was... oh.
Her mind was new. Well, not entirely. She was still Ivy Villanueva, and she was in Unica, and she still knew how the world worked and who she was. But she sensed newness, new neural connections that were yet untested, in a shadowy area of her brain. The newness felt as if it were supposed to be there. It wasn't frightening. Ivy probed it cautiously, then immediately backed away. It was powerful, whatever it was. And it had replaced something... but she couldn't tell what it was. Something had been painted over with black in her mind, blocked off from view. Her memories. Her eyes opened then, and the first thing she saw was a white ceiling. It smelled like antiseptic.
There was the familiar cadence of human speech. A man's voice, greeting her, using her name. She obeyed his command without hesitation, rising from the bed. The world swirled for a moment and her head felt heavy on her shoulders, but everything righted itself once she was on her feet. Something had happened to her, but she felt good. Sturdy. She took one step after another. She wasn't afraid. Ivy followed the man without speaking, and her new mind told her that he was someone to be trusted, and so she did.
Ivy listened attentively to Specialist Lyons, noting that almost every word was new to her, yet she understood. She was powered now, a Unican supersoldier. The dark place in her mind could influence others. She was not surprised by this revelation.
The man in the chair was older, scraggly and hardened, with an impassive face. He had committed a crime worthy of death. Ivy cast him a curious look. She prowled around his chair like a cat, taking him in, analyzing him. She could feel her new brain processing the options, sorting through emotions and scenarios to pick the most influential one. Slowly she crouched in front of him, and with one finger lifted his chin so that she could stare directly into his eyes. Then she unleashed it.
In a fraction of a second the man was screaming. He flailed away from her, falling backwards over his chair and scrambling across the tile floor. He slammed himself into the corner of the wall, cowering, his eyes nearly bulging out of his head, still shrieking like a frightened girl. He was frightened of her. His eyes were fixed on her as if she were the most horrifying monster he had ever seen. Ivy had jumped backwards in bewilderment. She had not been prepared for that.
"I... I..." she stuttered desperately. The man's screams were awful. A second later, she had cut it off, and the man lay panting on the floor. Ivy panted too, and little beads of sweat emerged on her forehead. She looked to Specialist Lyons, fear in her eyes at what she had just done. She put her fingers to her temples, trying to orient herself. She could fix this. She felt the electric signals whirring in the new corner of her brain, and then a second later she had decided.
The man was warm now. His skin was heating up, the nerves in his body were under her control. He sighed in relaxation, but now he was too hot. Ivy reversed it; tendrils of coolness like water flowed down his arms and legs. No, no, no, now he was too cold. Now she infiltrated his vision, and flipped the room upside down. He gasped and clutched at the floor. She righted it again apologetically. He gave her a withering look, so she tried something else. She conjured up an image in her mind: an ocean, with white sand and crashing waves. She did not know where such a place existed, but with her mind she created it and then placed it inside the man's head. She watched his eyes staring around at the scene in wonder. He was still in the same room with her, of course, but his mind was somewhere far away.
Ivy became aware of Specialist Lyons still watching her. She did not know if she had permission to manipulate him, but the temptation was too sweet to resist, and it was almost instinctive to spread the image across the room so that it seemed to float into his ear.
Once it did, it lasted only a few seconds before breaking off, and Ivy felt a sharp twinge in her temple. "Ow," she muttered.

Roman's typical dull gaze was wide and alert, so much so that his posture of boredom against the wall was obviously a farce, seeing as his neck craned forward, and his eyes rapidly devoured Private Villanueva and the things she did to the criminal. Of course he longed to see. He longed to experience the fear and the pleasure she could inflict upon someone someone with only a thought...and yet he simultaneously wished to run, to be free of her presence, or to call upon his own abilities to disable her. The whir of opposing inclinations within him caused a simple immobility in the Specialist. He simply watched.
That is, until the ocean met him.
Lyons studied the past as if it were a jewel and he a jeweler. He'd watched almost every movie that still existed, and when he read it was mostly old books concerning the way things had been before those of Sudo Europea and Kaipan Minor ruined the world for everyone. Oh yes, Specialist Lyons knew the ocean.
Roman stumbled forward, off of the wall, and caught himself with a gasp of awe and emotion. The moment did not last. The wonder of the scene fell away, and the Specialist was back in the large white training room with the new Private and a criminal. He turned away quickly to regather himself and remove the offensive stream of salty substance that had somehow escaped his eye. Anger threatened to turn him on the Private, but reason told him that she could not have known what she had done to him. She didn't know of Lyon's intense desire to explore the world above ground, to experience the earth of old, to...yes...even to examine the empires and their people and discern truth from...ah, alas, it was a foolish dream.
Lyons turned back to Villanueva and nodded his head, the grim expression claiming victory over him once again.
"Follow me." It was an order. He left the training room. The criminal would be dealt with later.
Lyons showed Ivy around her new home, covering the daily schedule and what her new military lifestyle looked like. He gave her important assignments, and then left her in the barracks to do with herself what she would.
